IDC D-sub Connectors

What are Insulation Displacement Connector (IDC) D-sub Connectors?

An insulation-displacement contact is also called an insulation-piercing contact. It is an electrical connector manufactured to make connections with the conductors of an insulated wire through a predefined connection technique which causes a predetermined sharpened blade or blades by using insulation and bypassing the tendency to strip the conductors of insulation prior to connecting. A theoretically reliable gas-tight connection is created when the connector blade is appropriately constructed and cold-welded to the conductor.

What are the three types of IDC connectors?

An electronic system is a hierarchical network of connections that allows various electronic devices to communicate with one another. Several interconnects are needed for the signal transmission and power distribution necessary to guarantee the proper operation of electronic equipment.

  • Board-to-Board Connectors

Board-to-Board Connectors are employed to link PCBs devoid of cables. The board-to-board connections are appropriate for systems with limited space because they can reduce wire clutter. Connectors in either a parallel or perpendicular layout can be used to connect the PCBs.

  • Wire/Cable-to-Wire/Cable Connectors

The name indicates that wire-to-wire connections link two wires. The connector has a fixed connection at one end to the wire. The connector's opposite end creates a detachable interface. Either crimping or insulation displacement contact can be used to create the permanent connection (IDC).

  • Wire/Cable-to-Board Connectors

A wire or cable is connected to a PCB via a wire-to-board connection, as the name implies. The board connections are typically press-in or soldered two-piece connectors, but some card edge versions are still in use. The wire connections are similar to those used for wire-to-wire connections.

What connector uses IDC termination technology?

Ribbon Cable Connectors - IDC technology is one of the most frequently utilized forms for ribbon cable connection solutions. Numerous alternative interfaces can use the ribbon cable connectors.

Are IDC connectors reliable?

IDC and crimped connections are both trustworthy connector technologies, and each has a unique set of benefits and drawbacks.
